Key Passages: Exodus 19

Narrative: The Exodus Road

There’s a threefold pattern for the Greater Exodus event. Retell the Exodus story in 3 parts—the way out, the way through, and the way in. Pay attention to the theme of the covenant in each part (fulfillment, establishment, renewal, etc.).

Discussion Questions:

1. The book of Exodus begins with the exile of the Israelites in Egypt. What is exile? How can the exodus be seen as a reversal of exile? (There’s a difference between Exodus and exodus. )

“Exile is not merely being removed from land—it is being removed from God's presence. The exodus is God bringing His people near; exile is the tragic reversal of that nearness.” —L. Michael Morales (Old Testament theologian)

2. The knowledge of Yahweh, the presence of Yahweh, and the promises of Yahweh were restored in each part of the Exodus Road. Can you make the connection and explain?
